The Public Health Management Certificate is a year-long program that helps public health professionals develop core management skills.

Format: Distance-based and in-person learning, small groups
Who Should Apply: Mid-career public health professionals who are in a management position or preparing to make a transition into a management role.

Cost: 2019 costs were $4,500 per person or $4,300 per person for groups of three or more; early-bird rate $4,000 per person or $3,800 per person for groups of three or more. Fees cover faculty, staff, facilities, program resources, access to distance learning technologies, and most meals during the on-site sessions. They do not cover travel or lodging expenses to and from the in-person sessions.

Intended Audience
Public health professionals who are in a management position or preparing to make a transition into management.
Learning Goals and Formats
The program curriculum covers management competencies selected from core competencies developed by the Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice. Learning takes place through the following activities.
- Program kickoff sessions. The program begins with an orientation webinar in June. Further orientation and initial curriculum are provided during an on-site session over four days in Seattle, typically in late July. The on-site session also provides the scholars an opportunity to become acquainted with each other, which will be important for the group activities and engagement throughout the program.
- Core courses. The core courses are presented through a series of online courses and webinars, providing progressive learning experiences. Curriculum topics fall within three domains: managing people and teams, managing money, and managing information.
- Elective courses. Elective courses allow each scholar to pursue one or more areas of management in greater depth, according to their interests.
- Integrated project. The integrated project experience makes sure that these skills aren't just learned—they're applied. Each scholar chooses a project that is timely and relevant to their current job. It is ideally something that they already have on their workplan.
Time Commitment
The Management Certificate program is designed to take participants beyond a simple awareness level of new skills and topics. As such, scholars are expected to invest a significant amount of time each week into their coursework. Scholars typically spend 6–8 hours per week on webinars, assignments, and readings. Scholars also attend weekly webinars on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Pacific.
What's the difference between the Management Certificate and the Leadership Institute?
The Management Certificate focuses on skills that provide structure and consistency within an organization. Some of these skills include budgeting, planning, staffing, conflict negotiation, and interpersonal understanding. The Leadership Institute focuses on skills designed to lead organizations through change or move organizations in a new direction. Some of these skills include visioning, self-understanding, motivating and inspiring others, and aligning people. Both sets of skills are needed for a successful organization.
